Design and Handling
The AZ3900 is a traditional upright in form factor – you push it on a wheeled head with the motor and dust cup mounted vertically above. At 7.068kg per Shark's published figure, it sits in the middle of the corded upright weight range. Heavier than the Miele Complete C3 cylinder at under 5.5kg but lighter than the Shark Navigator Pet ZU62 at 7.3kg. The weight is concentrated in the body rather than the head, which makes it manageable in normal use though the upright frame is still substantial.
Powered Lift-Away is the standout structural feature. The canister body detaches from the upright frame and can be carried separately while the brushroll head remains attached and powered. This is genuinely useful for stairs, above-floor cleaning and confined spaces where a full upright would not fit. It is not the same as a true canister vacuum – you are still carrying the motor body by hand – but it removes the rigidity that typically constrains uprights.
The 1.3L bagless dust cup is on the small side for a whole-home corded upright. Households with pets or larger floor areas should expect to empty it during a single full session. The hygienic no-touch ejection mechanism handles emptying cleanly. The 9m cord is the most generous in Shark's Australian corded upright lineup and the most practical operational improvement of this model. Fewer power point changes per session is a small but real quality-of-life upgrade.
Suction and Performance
The 600W motor is the only published power figure for the AZ3900. Shark does not publish an Air Watts or sealed suction equivalent for this model, so direct comparison with Dyson's AW-rated machines or the Miele Complete C3 is not possible on paper. What the AZ3900 does offer that most competitors do not is intelligent suction automation through four distinct sensor systems working together.
The first is Dirt Detect, which identifies hidden dirt embedded in carpet fibres and automatically increases brushroll speed and suction in those areas. The second is Floor Detect, an ultrasonic sensor that recognises whether you are on hard floor or carpet and adjusts accordingly. The third is Edge Detect, which increases suction within 5cm of walls and skirting boards to capture debris that typically requires a separate crevice tool. The fourth is Direction Detect, which works with the DuoClean Detect dual brushroll system to deliver effective pickup on both forward and reverse strokes – most upright vacuums only clean effectively in one direction. Together these systems mean you spend less time switching modes and making multiple passes.
The DuoClean Detect brushroll system uses two rollers in sequence: a soft front roller designed for hard floors and fine dust, and a stiffer rear roller for carpet and embedded debris. Anti Hair Wrap Plus technology actively prevents long hair from winding around the brushroll, a feature that matters significantly in pet households. The Odour Neutraliser captures airborne odours inside the vacuum rather than expelling them.
Filtration is Anti-Allergen Complete Seal Technology, which Shark claims traps 99.9% of dust and allergens inside the vacuum body. This spec does not appear on Shark AU's product page but is confirmed by multiple Australian retailer listings including Big W and Elite Electronics. The AZ3900 does not carry Sensitive Choice certification from the National Asthma Council Australia. For buyers specifically prioritising that certification, the Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog at $879 is the alternative. Shark does not publish a noise figure for the AZ3900.
Cord and Reach
The 9m cord is the most practical of the AZ3900's specs and one notch better than what most corded uprights ship with. Combined with Powered Lift-Away, the practical cleaning radius extends well beyond the cord length because the canister body can be carried away from the main unit for above-floor work. There is no extendable hose like the Shark Navigator ZU62 offers, which is worth noting if your cleaning routine relies heavily on stair and ceiling work. Powered Lift-Away covers most of the same scenarios but in a different form factor.
Accessories
In the box: 8-inch Crevice Tool and Pet Power Brush. That is the entire accessory set – two attachments. This is lean at $799.99 and the clearest area where Shark has cut to keep the price down. The Pet Power Brush is a powered mini head suitable for stairs and upholstery, which is the most useful single accessory for pet households. The Crevice Tool handles tight spaces and edges. There is no dusting brush, no dedicated upholstery tool and no extension wand. Buyers expecting a comprehensive out-of-box experience should budget for additional accessories from Shark's separate accessory range.
Who It Suits
The Shark PowerDetect Corded Upright is best suited to buyers who want a sensor-driven corded upright with strong pet hair credentials and value smart automation over manual control. The four-sensor system genuinely reduces cognitive load during cleaning – you do not need to think about which mode to be in or whether to switch power levels for different surfaces. Powered Lift-Away makes it more flexible than traditional uprights for stair-heavy homes and above-floor work. The 9m cord supports whole-home cleaning without constant power point changes. For pet-owning households who want a corded machine and find cordless runtime constraining, this is one of the better-equipped options at this price.
Buyers with allergy or asthma concerns who want independently certified performance should look at the Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog PowerLine at $879 instead – it carries Sensitive Choice certification from the National Asthma Council Australia, includes a wider accessory set with the Mini TurboBrush and offers Miele's typical service longevity. Budget-conscious pet households should weigh the Shark Navigator Pet ZU62 at $449.99 RRP (frequently discounted to $249.99). It lacks the four-sensor automation but has a slightly larger 1.6L dust cup, an extendable 3.6m hose and the same Anti-Allergen Complete Seal filtration at well under half the price. Buyers focused on cordless flexibility should look at the Shark Cordless PowerDetect Clean & Empty System at $1,199.99, which carries the same PowerDetect sensor stack with an auto-empty dock at a higher price point.
Within Shark's own corded upright range, the AZ3900 sits at the top. The Shark Stratos and Lift-Away models offer comparable form factors at lower prices with fewer sensor technologies. The Shark Navigator ZU62 is the entry pet-focused upright. The AZ3900 is the right choice when the priority is intelligent automation in a corded format and the budget supports the premium over the simpler Navigator. At RRP it is fairly priced for what it delivers. At $699.99 or lower it is one of the more capable corded uprights on the Australian market for pet households.
